Is India Facing a Twin-Deficit Challenge? | 23 August 2022
With higher commodity prices and rising subsidy burden leading to an increase in both fiscal deficit and current account deficit, it was also the first time the government had explicitly talked about the possibility of fiscal slippage in the current fiscal year. Key matters such as what is holding us back from joining international trade agreements, whether the central deficit is an honest number or not and what the government should work on were discussed. Hence this session explored the looming twin deficit problem that India is facing.

Union Budget 2021- Has it lived up to expectations? | 5 February 2021
Ananta convened a post-budget session to discuss the country’s growth plans in the pandemic ridden economy. The discussion was around five large points: lost growth estimates, pandemic and livelihoods, the poor state of government finances, taxation policies, farmer’s agitation and bold reforms. Livelihoods and employment generation emerged as a major area of concern for the panellists; given that despite the informal sector being especially hit by the pandemic, the budget made very little mention of job creation and presented no formal plan of regenerating employment. Implementation was also seen as a key concern; privatization and attracting investment cannot become a reality without a concrete plan in place.

Ananta Centre convened a panel discussion with the top CEOs of the country to understand the impact of the pandemic on the economy and the consequent measures taken by the government The opinion was that, while the call for self reliance is a strong one, the doors of the economy need to be kept open for the world. Also, the inherent chinks in our systems which predate the virus need to be dealt with in order to achieve sustainable and strong growth.
