India-US Investor Initiative

The India-US Investor Initiative examines the risks and barriers that shape US investment in India’s clean energy transition, and the reforms needed to address them. It draws on expertise from across the private sector and the investment community to ground its recommendations in practical experience rather than broad policy assumptions.

A deep-dive exercise growing out of the India-US Track II Dialogue, the Initiative is working toward a defined outcome: a set of proposed reforms to strengthen investor trust in India, with 2028 as the horizon for measurable progress on lowering information barriers, building mutual trust, and advancing the regulatory changes that reduce risk for investors.

Understanding the risks and barriers

The first phase set out to build a well-grounded picture of what actually discourages US investment in India’s clean energy transition. Through a wide-ranging set of stakeholder interviews, spanning market investors, academics, think tank experts and philanthropy leaders, this phase moved past general assumptions about investment risk and toward specific, well-evidenced findings. That research is being consolidated into a white paper intended to inform decision makers directly involved in shaping the investment landscape.
