Pakistan, UAE sign multibillion-dollar pacts to boost economic ties

Caretaker PM Kakar reaches Kuwait
to cement ties

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar after completing
his two-day official visit to Abu Dhabi on Tuesday evening reached Kuwait,
where several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) are expected to be inked
between the two states in different fields.
During his two-day visit, the caretaker premier will meet
Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al Jaber Al Sabah and his Kuwait counterpart Sheikh
Ahmed Nawaf Al Ahmed Al Sabah.
As the year 2023 marked the 60th anniversary of establishing
diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Kuwait, the two sides are likely to
sign MoUs in several fields, including food security, manpower, information
technology, mineral exploration, energy and defence.
Business confidence improves, but
still negative

(OICCI) on Tuesday reported that business confidence in Pakistan improved seven
percentage points but it still remained negative 18% in October-November 2023.
Results of the Business Confidence Index Survey (BCI) – Wave
24 suggested that business sentiment had bottomed out at negative 25% in May
2023 compared to positive 17% in May 2022.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR),
during the meeting, both sides discussed various areas of mutual interest
including cooperation in the fields of defence, security and military training
as well as the regional situation and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

creditors reach preliminary debt deal

Sri Lanka and the country’s Official Creditor Committee
(OCC) co-chaired by India, Japan and France as the Chair of the Paris Club have
agreed on a debt restructuring deal, a statement issued by the Paris Club
Secretariat said.
“The OCC and Sri Lanka agreed on the main parameters of a
debt treatment consistent with those of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF)
arrangement between Sri Lanka and the IMF,” the statement said.
President to make three proposals
at COP28 in Dubai

President Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to present three
proposals at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (Cop28) to be held in
Dubai.
Sri Lanka’s main proposal is to establish a Climate Change
University here.
The other two proposals are the establishment of a Climate
Justice Forum for Third World countries that are inconvenienced by the
activities of developed countries and the establishment of a Tropical Belt Forum
for tropical rainforests.

Borrowing to get costlier as BB
raises repo rate

Bangladesh Bank on Sunday again raised the repo rate by 50
basis points to 7.75%, in an attempt to contain inflation by making money
costlier.
After this hike, the repo rate will be effective from
Monday.
The repo rate is the rate at which the Bangladesh Bank lends
money to commercial banks or financial institutions.
In the case of a repo, a dealer sells government securities
to investors, usually on an overnight basis, and buys them back the following
day at a slightly higher price.

The overall number of access points in the country has
increased since 2019 onwards. Among all the access points, the branches and

Myanmar’s junta chief said on Wednesday “foreign experts”
were helping ethnic minority armed groups in their widespread offensive against
the military along the northern border with China.
Clashes have raged across Myanmar’s northern Shan State
after an armed alliance of three ethnic minority groups launched surprise
attacks against the military in October.
The groups have seized dozens of military positions and a
town important for trade with China, in what analysts say is the biggest
military challenge to the junta since it seized power in 2021.
China navy ships arrive in Myanmar
for joint drills

Three Chinese navy ships have arrived in Myanmar for joint
drills with its navy, the country’s junta said, as a border conflict strains
ties between the Southeast Asian nation and its most important ally.
A destroyer, frigate and a supply vessel carrying hundreds
of sailors arrived at Thilawa port on Monday ahead of “naval security exercises
between Myanmar and China,” the junta’s information team said.
It did not give details about the drills or when they would
begin but state media reported the Chinese “naval task force” was 700 sailors
strong.

Nepal becomes second country in
Asia to register same-sex marriage

Nepal registered the country’s first same-sex marriage in
Lamjung on Wednesday.
According to Dordi Rural Municipality Chairman Yuvaraj
Adhikari, the marriage was registered at the ward 2 office of the rural
municipality between Surendra Pandey, aged 27, of Kawasoti Municipality-8 in
Nawalparasi East, and 37-year-old Ram Bahadur Gurung, who goes by the name
Maya, of Dordi Rural Municipality-2 in Lamjung.
Surendra and Maya registered their marriage five years after
getting married at a temple, according to Maya.
